History of Bari Patandevi
Patandevi is the city magistrate and preserver power of Patna. Bai Patan Devi has an important place among the 51 Shakti Peeths . According to the Puranas, wherever the body parts of Shiva's first wife Sati fell, have been called Shakti Peetha. It is believed that the right thigh of Sati fell here. There are two Patanadevis in Patna - Badi Patadevi and Chhotipatan Devi. Badi Patandevi is located south of Gulzarbagh in Maharajganj between Ashok Rajpath and Shershah road(english road). There is a big pit behind the temple which is called Patnadevi Khandha. It is said that the black idols of the three goddesses, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati which are placed in the temple were found in this pit. The idol of Bhairava is also installed in the temple which is worshiped as Vyomkesh. In the temple. It is customary to offer raw food to the goddess and day time and cooked at night. Badi Patan Devi is known for Kaulik Mantra.
The building of Chota Patan Devi is older than that of Baripatan Devi. The ritual of sacrificing in Badi Patan Devi is quite old, which continues till today. English historian Francis Buchanan (1811-12) has also written about it. According to him, a large number of goats were sacrificed here on every Saturday and Tuesday. Patandevi is worshiped as the village goddess.
But if one is found of architectural masterpiece then in that sense this temple is not going to offer them anything.
पटनदेवी पटना की नगर आधिष्ठात्री और परिरक्षिका शक्ति हैं। देश के ५१ शक्तिपीठों में बड़ीपटन देवी का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। पुराणों के अनुसार शिव की पहली पत्नी सती का अंग जहाँ-जहाँ गिरा वो सभी जगह शक्ति पीठ कहलाएं। मान्यता है की यहाँ सटी की दाहिनी जंघा गिरी थी। पटना में दो पटनदेवी है- बड़ी पटनदेवी और छोटीपटन देवी। बड़ी पटनदेवी गुलजारबाग के राजकीय मुद्रणालय के दक्षिण महराजगंज में अशोक राजपथ और शेरशाह पथ जिसे इंग्लिश रोड भी कहते थे के बीच स्थित है। मंदिर के पीछे बड़ा सा गड्ढ़ा है जिसे पटनदेवी खंधा कहते हैं। ऐसा कहा जाता है की मंदिर में प्रतिष्ठित तीनों देवियां , दुर्गा, लक्ष्मी और सरस्वती की प्रतिमाएं इसी गड्ढे में निकाली गयी थी। प्रतिमाओं का रंग कला है। मंदिर में भैरव की भी प्रतिमा स्थापित है जिसे व्योमकेश के तौर पर पूजा जाता है। मंदिर में रत को कच्ची और रात को पका भोग चढाने का रिवाज़ है। बड़ी पटन देवी अपने कौलिक मंत्र के लिए जाना जाता है।

बड़ीपटन देवी की तुलना में छोटी पतन देवी का भवन पुराना है। बड़ी पटन देवी में बलि चढाने का रिवाज काफी पुराना है जो आज तक चल रहा है. अंग्रेजी इतिहासकार फ्रांसिस बुकानन (१८११-१२) ने भी इसके बारे में लिखा है। उसके अनुसार प्रत्येक शनिवार और मंगलवार को यहाँ काफी संख्या में बकरों की बलि चढ़ाई जाती थी। पटनदेवी ग्राम देवी के रूप में पूजित है। हालाँकि स्थापत्य कला की बात की जाए तो यह मंदिर किसी तरह उस पर खरा नहीं उतरती।
